Welcome to face in the zone show about sports and faith and how that to come together and widescreen touch. Right now discover how people in sports and walking FaceBook posts might mean give burned and pastor can kill her. On sports Radio One 057 FM the fan. Then. And walk and defeat in his own on sports for. The man I'm Mike Benjamin Watson and my cohost he's back this week. I cut him for a week it's a fact I was so bad the week before someone as they go how is abroad Kinsley oh man that's terrible it's terrible. Just never good when your fallen asleep during the break up a feud is pastor can tell there. For Brooke's side Baptist Church he only got suspended for one week. Equipment that next time and it's a month until it's in December on injuries there in the that is on you know a lot to me about my school days not dances and ended. I got cut because that brought you back. We have moved to do GB and podcaster step that first cut that week out today on glad to be back with you well I'm excited about today's guest. You know took it took me a little bit to get him but I've done a lot of research and this is a guy it's June great work he really isn't and I don't think he sleeps much I can't tell you I really don't he's catcher Chad Johnson he's the team chaplain. For the Pittsburgh Steelers in Los Angeles Dodgers and he's the founder of elevate international dot org. And as we talked two pastor Chad Johnson a couple of ways to look at the information and look up by some of the stuff that he's dew point. I wanted to website Chad M Johnson dot com it's one more chair at M Johnson dot com or elevated international dot org. One word again elevate international dot org. Our pastor chip thinking so much perfume it's your time are you doing today. I'm doing great tournament than every. And also he's a pastor to. Once he's ahead he's as he got on a busy. There's a lot of output yelled out yeah the only player Richard softball team and a more up front. I answered that because that's the gun. I got her random numbers go until we are too busy but look at this guy who DC and Los Angeles he's in Pittsburgh he. Words of pastor Jim do you located in Phoenix. Yeah right now I'm here for Orton. What a lot and that started during spring training which is this one of the most fun times of the year of course or we're not a policy that there are out right now for the right. Louise at thirteen inches of snow A instead you're about to get cut should not talk. Obama but to put you won the match you're going to benefit. And I still still no pay and net that's mikes so Mike's been a coach for like 35 years I did so it was just an example his coaching witnesses coaching style coming he is Debra are you talking and I remember. I still have a vice no forward for two days I don't want to talk about it it was it was bad gentlemen I think slow down there. It would hopefully you know bring in Anaheim angels I can't it's just kept snow and chatted the enemy there wouldn't stop by asking you know I'd look outside. It just slowed down Wilbon I'd go get a glass of milk look again it was like a blizzard. Man I'm telling you it good for you got a good friend you are. Good for sheer what a bush should be happy with the weather they win when your Downey spring training with the Dodgers to get a chance. Tick tick talk to these guys is it is it easier. On atmosphere for you to do would shoot which are looking to accomplish. Yeah I looked preparing. It's it's such a great time because obviously you know for baseball players. They're all over throughout the throughout the year under machine there never in the city. More than you know or are they usually and so on you know per return they're here referrals. 67 straight weeks. In that is really good because it in the routine you know court reporter receive an out of my fifteenth and in the NFL Burton in the NFL my ninth Irving. Ultimately baseball and so. You know there's quite. You know big differences. It's pretty big contrast and do sports but. But the or in the spring training no ripe for it and everybody really excited you know part of an NC in a new day. The guys that are you know are receptive in early rates that it. Whatever they need to get to this dubious group making up for the year so it's agree to our. So how are the Dodgers looking for this year. Well at every year the last probably expert in your work against that but. You know but what sort of World Series B yeah its image we leave it outlook. And is more the same this year you know. The great confidence. I think Robert is an awesome awesome it for mr. current great -- and so a lot of European Union court. Not to mention the silent in the air when the sun in the blue skies shall. Yeah helps them know you're there. Yeah you know we've had AJ Ellis on the floor you know he cut all the Dodgers for a for many years my Kino where he yeah yeah I guess is he's the only Major League Baseball player that comes north for the winner Connecticut. No merit to grow from here he said I look. I lover but I gotta I gotta come north for the winner doesn't make a whole lot of sense but I do and I have to do and he actually came its center studio with us. For an hour just a really good man walking worthy or I know that I read an article that when he got traded from the Dodgers she was sad that. He. You know he's pretty good friends with though with the woods that's starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw and there are pretty good friends and and he says he's gonna miss that whole organization. And he went on to see what a class act from the top to the bottom the Dodgers are. Yeah we're you know exit specifically he works. It was such a cool thing as a chaplain at Indy you know that now watches is growth and process development. You know out with a straight years and so are the chances you know bureaucratic. Go through that hole on the bubble you know on some are close enough that it ultimately. Backed down and back. Early in and get established over the last you know 56 years has been awful that it could happen to a better. Yet Chad he has one of the greatest stories that I've I've recount of the several times a phases zone that. They were planned. Giants and Buster Posey came up to the plate. And he said buster you know has a great love for the lord you said Clayton its pension and he said buster stepped in the box and he said I just say what you think about that study today in Romans will announce some. And Russert said yeah that's that's great and he's an inning as chase said that. He really went by and so he's tonight's this and what about what what what what are your thoughts there on Roman seventh. And he said AJ stepped how to box. And like Jimmy say. A jail talk I'll talk Romans with in a little bit there right now mirrored face on the best Major League pitchers and you know. Period amen and yeah she thinks that a I bundled then get ready. Yeah I so to answer your. Say what you hear about moments where they're probably incur. Could hit exactly shed that's how Christians talk smack create a lot I have taught us an attack to hit him and the stock room seven graduates on seven outs on seven hits you. That's awesome hey can we talk a little bit about about Europe prix where you were born and raised in and a little bit about so where he went to school stuff like that. Yeah absolutely a lot. I came up I like to say not immoral. You know Leave It to Beaver type moment. This incredible all American family you know small little bit down can't stop with Colorado calls. Now named Dolores. And the lower Colorado River runner early lead into a lake that's right on the right on the late in just a beautiful beautiful place to be great you know we had by trailed yet KE. You know I'm 1000. Removal it is debatable during Ahmad stammering. My dad and mom momma little subtle. Or oppose your sister and so. Growing up in Colorado who's. Been really amazing when our relationship and the relationship and or any place. My. Grandparents both sets of representatives. Have been in my outlook of our house. So we just shadow wonderful family on thirteen year old. And their parents by ever. You know except my that was Mike coats and everything. A mother who is incredible mob. It might rendering problem then went searching your coworkers and or yeah. The road trying to pull out from our life in this group are in. Within six months. Like really good to acute stern throughout our debt. In having worked turn. With or that we face you're fairly low but it was well put. Now are really happening eight background you know. We were so recruitment in the dirt in doubt about it. And Ukraine in the house there in time those. The vote in preamble Bible now injury in great together. Just you know a lot of low but it's. I'll vote wouldn't like it we didn't avenue hurdle and so. My mother. Ended up moving. Less than a year later down to southern New Mexico itself Coke I'll order directs my mom works. What does help education. And prevention or. The native tribes. Or their. Down there and try this or ordered their cut out there so. Albemarle books that are out now by. To some legal problems. Well. Tree turn to the bars she turns out call turn you throughout life and development in months and so you can imagine thirteen year old keys. I had a BB ram Ringo it's targeted Arabs generally. Yeah. I doubt about it now we're went but it was after it was but. I just found myself. At that eighty. I found myself turning to sports. About sports I was like it was kind of like. Arc for re well within our or for note it's sport torture me you know my. And that's floats. I cannot answer up to sports and I very much so there. Are players for a possibly if everything he ever match and I. Worked as hard record to be used to the doctor. In outlook success there. Grew up with sort of article back and forth between my ball in my at all felt the pressure but I think. Many on me and other related CO workers are divorced element of people parent should. You know important between and so I spent time or back and forth. But I ended up not graduating. In Colorado. I graduated and went down if this on your opponent. Played basketball or a junior college. And the community outreach to them there as part during the make it to you very to be a while. And while I was there. I. Are rendered through regard. Without that care about the junior high school. Or in. It back a little bit about your high school most important part of the story. What social Christian athlete or basketball. And while I was there. The gospel for the very first time and that and sports context and sort cabinet. Sealed every. Yes understanding are also understanding that I had to battle. A preconceived ideas about the dispute over urged people or whatever. You know how the broad electorate. Respective are far from reality of our lives have now brought out. But. You're like me and that's where I wanted to be one day. You know aryan Bible. And preaching the gospel and other people right where they were in excited about and excited about sports in the hours. In the midst of this it's great where life was on apart now requirement of recruit and I know what you're out of our athletes with straight days split. Dialog inside of the gospel without an art school that it was a Christian aspect of bond that sports you know. Past and mr. go to my life. You. Ran. He could it be that this series and so I think any and I don't blame. And archer in my testimony that involved with a group there in that group would start sharemarket model one of the coordinators of boot camp or that he's. Was. One of the meetings are certain markets more announcement come back. And be a leader. A global leader terror camp counselor. And well I would. There you. Is you know on the lord to lead me to another school in critical play at new Mexico state university. And then transfer and then. I got power using old. Am I. Opportunity to go. Play at air on Christian university you the coach was there at that camp and so he asked me to come play Packers are Christian and so well you know. I'm excited I'm like he's and I love the Bible that but about credit for by. Leo and the board that conversation in the mood Phoenix. Packed up everything. And everybody I knew. Will the Phoenix who go to air or Christian university here click for your their early ministry of economic and that. That's and that's awesome guys we were gonna get too quick break we're gonna file I've got some follow questions bag what a great testimony. Chad in in in icu a lot on on this this show you know we have we have a lot of guests at the worst thing ever happened to them. Their lives they stole a candy bar. And we've got guys that has some trials and tribulations. Like you did at the age of thirteen that. You know when you said hey you're accepted Jesus Christ he was serious about it that. Mend their there's a lot of people listen to show that. When they make that decision they're gonna understand the difference in their life like I have. At two at a later age and how pastor can do that early age will continue or conversation. With pastor Chad Johnson. He's the founder of elevate international. And the team chaplain for the Los Angeles Dodgers. And the Pittsburgh Steelers and again we'll continue with him on the other side of the break. This is faith in the zone on sports Radio One 057 FM. Pastor check out there an inside bunny you know Brooke I'm Baptist Church our special guest if he's the founder of elevate international. Can go to elevate international dot org it's a great website make sure that you put at least fifteen minutes aside. When you go to elevated international dot org or you go to Chad M Johnson dot com I you're you're an act you be able to get away from these web sites is such good stuff. On it and then amount of work that that pastor Chan in his his team. That they're doing is is incredible we're gonna get into some of that. But to welcome back to a pastor Chad Johnson he I think he's so what's your testimony that first segment was powerful and Anne and I really appreciated. And I wanted to talk a little this segment about how you got into it to work with Major League teams. And an NFL teams but I need to read on the idea do some research on pastor Chad. The first sub paragraph from what the articles I read says this. I've found out about Paris Chad Johnson last week when asked. Steelers cornerback Kevin Faulk tourney interview who would who made the biggest impression on him within the steeler organization. I was dreading transcribe it from there namely team spirits and Cameron Heyward even Mike Tomlin instead I found myself same weight who. The person who's made to visit the biggest impact and fought so far it's Chad Johnson's team chaplain. What a great first pure crap I've read that that shortly rhetoric the rest of the article because of that paragraph. And and I think that says a lot about the work that your doing. I wanna talk a little bit about how you got involved with with the Steelers who Dodgers and with professional athletes. Yeah. But it's pretty accurately. The last. In here. They've been great in his or that all that spot where he is never a perfect out there and search my life. And and I just go right back in the sport or 020. And that I knew their World Cup all. And. Eluded him because while I was playing for without call or workers university and while I was here all in the inner city church. Irving. Was he young people. And I continue to serve with Sosa person out. In the interests of the art as what I call it metro represented it's like to chaplain. At eight about 20/20 one to about twelve high school team. In the inner city of Phoenix and trying to learn how to do this. You know Trout by ear art that type of crash course but when you had brought up to that and insists it was an amazing experience and so I'd love to. And Ehrlich. Name industry on any green bra Torrey last year great grant. Movement armed men her death. On any area there while. The they are not healthy war problem answers. Is that a court order or even years and you're white or Minnesota Vikings what I remember most being a packer fan. We used to you know package take you to twice a year I think that's now app that I've got to courts are what what a heck of a man he was. Yet very yard deeper but one. Or art or dirty or professional sports world. It's interesting because without Irving at her inner city. Urgent need. In the past there. Irving and computer servers. I ripped it. Out. And work Airgas basically to allow. There are making any money year I'd like to be. Beat Iowa and I go why are kept on choir of our. Guys are on the and you know I would I was happy to be out the door. All year. He now. A guy who. Whether. Are these are on our team. You don't intercity cute. I was the drummer forest and these things called explodes into the troubled awhile or. I'm industry. I'll he was also. Water meter. Three feet. And in green and move in and it is Al on the heel I hear all he voted. There are on the heel in the water move our earth on. This gentleman who has turned the water on. Mean we have our compass and that didn't sell it. You know they were Eric are they. Already done in the Cuban. And Utley that are on are for this. You know throughout my name in the budget that you know you're going to call my. Company. You know this should it be number number. Number EU ought to be asked corporate secrets on the corner. And and punch but. But. You could like Alderman ergo you know. It is obvious you know I must work inside you is or. Pulled back on my earliest you know. You know Andy's set in these old school he. It I think reverend. No ought to Kobe and offer tomorrow that clock era here. You know at number that. Are. Vacant why in the world that you want me. Consider or carton. He goes under then you know what maybe her work in the city ought. You play in the players play in what I do in the we in urban community. Well there as a sort of a passport. If there this morning we are taught for twenty minutes orderly about your beat that are out there. And I earners as the wrong kind of spotter I'm only. Couple months short of being 24 years old. And it would look at well you know me and yeah yeah sure and it. When he added that the tradition and or there or nine years is incredible. Credible. First our very first up though the army. There are out on sale. At the cork on the last. Played. At an article so. Our role in my 99 which we go. Go out on and or replace all the part inspire people are tired. Apart and there are on the part of birdie was right next in the does not. Hurt in doubtful. Don't like. Or not my cup of -- were beaten him and on Saturday at midnight when Lambert you know over. You know it's dining in their own are there oh. Am I doing here you know. And I literally before it got out far what are reversed. I'll be number there and rehearsed my resignation speech before ever step on put out of the car. Yeah that though well under qualified. You know to a litany. Sought and grant through my mind like like a train. In spun out of control in that it felt so overwhelmed under qualified. Right before you know I. If he picked up forward. This open real militant from the strength elect locker room talk rant about the pregame speech that he gave me and a you know he said. I didn't bring you here. You know to give him work. You know that to be able to have with the I came out but you're so that you would give them which you. What you have an ever but the scripture that would. It even say it's over and goals I don't and that the Q why would these. You know and so. I just I mean it was that bad blocker. Yeah I mean you know like. Offers. Apple and in its sale and thirteen seed in the later here I am still so. Well I that's my question I'm OK yeah. That's my question to each in what was your first challenge to. My personality so I think I think that I talk about it. David having. Having in the going to when he was sixteen bit not ready until August 3 yeah I remember I remember speaking about the process without that group doesn't. You know kind of more votes and success and it's ready early really be able to step into our day when it comes you know. Pleasing part so to vote easily. Oh absolutely are we we're we have been comment on sunny nice as we kind of want it and we want it now. And guess that I unit now on my given to you now so that I that would in any great challenge grant for that that's awesome we are Turkey. Miller chart. Which he had pastor Chad Johnston. Can now you go to Chad M Johnson dot com for more formation or elevated international dot org. Chad isn't team chaplain for the Pittsburgh Steelers Los Angeles Dodgers. He's the founder of elevate international. Really gets to break other side of the break or to talk to pastor chatter about elevated international. You know this right up your Alley by the way pastor camp while he meant he loves. Yeah I'll just read the mission statement for this transfer me to equip the urban community to impact culture once used one family one generation. At a time. They date as they do some great work and we wanna talk a little bit about elevate international. And when we do that and I'll talk about this and I'll give you this web said he can't but if you're feeling led to tell Chad. And the people elevate international. Each. In almost every week faster can tell their birds are a Baptist Church. Yeah how our special guest pastor Chad Johnson man that's I love the story and how we got indicted in two working professional athletes. That was great you can check out his work again Chad M Johnson dot com wanna talk this segment about elevated international. Dot org is is the website and elevated international. Is really doing some great work him. And the website gives you an idea some of the stuff that they're doing. And I just really impressed. Check it give me if you can't kind of background that how you started in and be the founder of elevated international call that thing kind of started. Yeah definitely. Recruitment during an air. You know I'm not like. Malta on Colorado. And I got thrown at them. A year and it Phoenix and there were ordered renewed vigor that Colin Powell. Google who you know take them. Maybe not so as soon as something that would people predict. You know release it and that would put on it aren't voluntary act. I vote at heart of course her for young people on the court and lie. You know what would like that's promoting no respect what apple about Stanley in my parents who think that nature are a lot of broken and we spoke. Her. You know compassion and sympathy empathy. For a lot of these young men and related. I would think you know court that your live in being an element here. Nobody in their lives and so on we started. Only international almost duels early. Saying from the experience that I got from. Camp that CA camp as a seventeen year old. Student you know athlete who had. His life broken into pieces and you know and I'm looking at these kids with the same scenarios and saying I know that exist in return life to and so Michael just to create. And experience there a place where they can also. At the impact that experience and life changing experience that I had as a as a teenager and so that would cut out Alan announced orbit we would execute the way of the started at the chain of originally. We take intercity kids a way. You know what 34 days and get away from the distractions in religious. You know Sokol was in the air in the their problems minister to their hearts really relate to. And it was a natural in connection between my two worlds like sports world. And athletes work wouldn't and that is work with in the inner city so many of the guys in the locker room were also. You know that was kind of their profile or their breath background and where their heart so. It was cool for me to build it seemed athlete also tightening in opening. Reach young people so that's China that's started. Yeah agenda so is that a I mean you have a facility there and didn't do the kids come into the silliman you have a Jim what's I mean. All fields without it what you have so is okay. Know what we do we we run and so we need a partner where it's it's organizations and and really the city of Phoenix. Four. We have a young women mentoring program. We have in school of business and entrepreneurial support retreat to. These young kids from their urban communities to learned of you know the value of cash in the value of business and how to start a business. It's that's been there before adjourning and then we have a leadership program we also have at bats program called that zone. Are that programs is a work in incursion. They had to get involved in its lies because we're watching Munich in such an urban community. You know the next biggest problem that's not knowing the lord. Is these these Kitna had a bad. And assists for the debate issues that we stand for matters to so vast and so. They're so little overwhelming but we say about it you'd also know about it. This we started with our capital program to say hey wanna create a let's face at a time. That's couldn't do censored stats to be able to really connect with their kids are and not just they had to uncles are. Nephews. Nieces or mentors and their panties you know just just just really. Encourage positive male interaction with these young people. And of course we do camps we do we boot camp every summer for our youth we just got back from our young adult. Camp that we do as well so there's there's a lot different but at the captain within over internationally yet checked up the works regularly. We are rarely do you pest Chad. Pastor let me ask you this I've I've coached basketball lot of different areas here in in the city of Milwaukee. And I know you going to lose some neighborhoods in some communities. As as as they're white basketball coach it's hard it's hard to keen trust. In that community. Until like you don't till I show that look I'm not going any work. And when I tell you that that we practice at 7 o'clock we have practice at 7 o'clock it's not 715. It's not 7:18. We started 7 o'clock. And think consistency. Is is the key to this and when you tell these young people something. Whether it's it's acute from the suburbs your kid from the U to from the inner city. You have to as an adult you have to follow up on that if I tell a player that number to call on the 715. Tonight to talk about playing time. I don't call him at seven tent and I surely don't call me at 735. I call him at 715. And I think that teens there trust how are you were able to key in the trust of would be such a young guy in the beginning. In the in the city of Phoenix. You know their I think on its thinking honest I was gonna say that very thing. I think in this country. You know Paul and the way it is problem Colorado. And you know I'm single. Not married there then it's. On. That I have thousand. Two years mainly. You know African American kid that called me pot you know and it was because. They've. Baseball consistency. You know and that was the main thing airport and chrome like or what little co leader on our global carbon. I'm not repair and there partner can't. You know I hit people who I don't want to circular that ever expect good. We're gonna compete here until liberal and are common there because. Well look the nuclear. Committing political thing they've got no. You know. That was just a really addicting thing and very honoring king spoke. I've been filtered have to swallow for like it was so many young people. Wept and outgrow in. Are for rent its normal nine. Saw. It shed one well one thing it just analysts think it's that. I try to verbalize. You know the folks is if you're gonna impact people yet to be able to connect with them. And distant visiting with UNC and you know what what does been allowing you do he's taken yet as a connector I mean I can just LP in these his wanna be around especially as a colony pops. And god she's in muted impact on you know for for the warden and four. His kingdom. And I was glad to hear you say that not filing a convicted that certain say you you can call them because we talked to Mike in many college coaches. Either football or basketball who said. They're more than just a coach now. There they're they're actually almost like a father figure in many cases and you you know you've been coached in high school ball for a long time Lichen and you. You've probably been seen on high school level. And and so really Chad it it is easier you're the one guy has put their lives that they're that they're gonna find stability. And they're gonna find guidance. And even discipline at times you know to do the right thing. Are yeah it's been a mayor has been incredible. For the incredible honor. And I'm. HM let me ask you this is I know personally. It issue when Wendy and you're kind of like a coach for these kids I would I would think that. There are times when the kids that worry. On either coaching or your ministry to. They good on the wrong path. And it's all I'd for summer I take it really personal and I don't know why take it is personal as I do are you able to edit. I'm not take it so personal when when when something like that happens. Well are. I don't I would say no I mean art's sake or there are no better but it. I reaction that we don't know that but I agree that it provides these guys. And ladies and it's oh man you're so close you know and I think that's literacy goes sometimes in our party and their wing panel thinker qualifier is. They feel the same it's to be real ministry. That you know so you know there's been a lot of circumstances where. I got the rootkit what article aground and stressed that you know the singular moment that I welcome back. As a youth pastor for about twenty years Chad you know kids are dying for you go lost the ball games. And or are where we're where I would allele watching game. And then I would see the you know they they they kind of quit on their team you know the more shake hands after the game you know. And there arson there I just since they got to give me some opportunities to go. Don't try to help them through this how are her.
