From gutters to the landscape from replacement windows to a full basement remodel and everything individually it's time for the Milwaukee married home improvement jokes and our gears you're hosed big time Mike may get on sports Radio One 057 FM the fan. Welcome to the more hairy home improvement show on sports Radio One 057 F from the fans. I might we give or alongside my cohost. Special guests two weeks in a row assume more than I see my wife he has Tom made bill. From story hill renovations. Goes story no renovations dot com. For more information Thomas Soria and it might Mario good it's good to see you sag to deceive it's quite different than last week when we were having personal. Don't competition who wanted to care river who won that you did two in the garbage can down so and it's there you go out here but I wasn't warmed up he wasn't prepared in my Armas hung sorry it's hurt and that like I'm not thrown again for two weeks isn't a conscious kid and amplified. Hey I'm wanted to talk to Wilbur divide especially. This first segment about some things that are common out. With more keen Neary in we had a chance last week to a on talk a little bit about these things but did not. I don't think spent enough time on it so I appreciate your willingness to talk more about it coming up that may twentieth and 21 tour of a model homes. And we touched on it last week but I just think it's it's an event that around people who had co. Start going every year. You know once we get him to come out and and take a look at what we're talking about with this tour model homes. People get booked and and they start calling in and look at on the website when is it next year because it's a really good of that. Yeah I is fantastic like I think we talked about last week it's just a fantastic way for. Consumers actually really get an up close and personal look not not only at the craftsmanship in the work of some these great contractors that have. House is on the tour but you know a lot of times these these houses are toured buys staff members and company owners and you get to did. One on one conversations with these people and really get a feel for the company and in and some of the stuff they do and who they are nice I. We personally we've done and this will be the third year that we've done the tour and we really enjoy a this because it's a real relaxed low key atmosphere. Were really able to connect with some some some neat people especially in Indian communities. Where we do a lot of work in our on our last couple of tour projects have been wallets also where. We do a lion share of our work and I think it's great for the people come on take a look. Tom how do a mirror remembers. How did they get involved in this and how do they decide is it too easy you would story oh renovations that she's say it looked. This is a really good project for us and we want to be involved in that. Or is it Mary telling you that we would like in about how does that work well you know it's a little bit of balls I mean obvious scenario would love to have as many participants is possible you know. The neat thing about this two or is that you know geographically. You know we try to hit pockets you know we'll have a cluster of homes and wall told some media cluster homes and wait fish steak. So obviously the more participants the more we can kind of fill those areas but. You know in terms of a remodeling contractor and what we like about it is that. You know like I said he gets us in front of the customers we typically when we kinda set it up similar to we do with the WRAs which you're familiar with in terms of you know we look at some really cool projects that we've done over the the past year. And if there's a good fit in terms of not only you know the project that we did. But you really have to have a good client that's gonna want to open their home for the whole weekend that was my follow up question have you had. Are there are certain clients that say look I. I'm just I I'm not real comfortable with that there are there are any in you know sometimes it's it did deals more with just educating on them I nine you know people aren't going to be run around your policy you know bay and in any room etc. but. I'm you do have to have the right clients in the right personalities today and like I said the right project an art to make it all work so it's really. I didn't see me. It's the stars all have to align in order for you to get a good. You come to a weight when my wife and I went on the tour hum I didn't know that so I just went upstairs took a shower. And I can hunt this kid and cut it kind of gives out his NASCAR sound I've got the clicker and might have watched OTB. Asked her she can make me some popcorn and he didn't realize that was a part of it steal contest. Kids with that but I would that you know I understand. That there may be some people it's a new look. And I and now real real comfortable with that. If those if the people that that are feeling that way if they had then somebody who went on the tour prior. And and walked in some niece almost they would have a different feeling on that. Yeah I think so you know I it's just a in William Wheaton you know. If we have a good tragic that we want to put on there and we're kind of on offense to decline in terms of team and he might not you know in ninety lukewarm to the idea. You know we do go and meet him in just trying to give them markets in terms of you know this is how it's run in and and two in kind of prep them for it and actually the two or. House that we have on. On tour this year. Is actually next door to the house that we had on the tour last year so very familiar so exactly so they saw what happened the whole weekend and how we had its staffed and actually came over and and we were working on their house at the time that we were doing night of the tour self. I actually took a couple of people that were they were nice enough to let me take people who are looking at art project last year. Through their house while it was going on just to kind of see what the site look like. As a project is in the works and that worked out well for you it did it show that getting hurt and we had a great client that was William you know willing to do that. It's you know what if if if as an air remember if you don't look at every angle on this in a good way to say hey look I you know were gonna have. We're going to be doing this what's bring some potential clients and to be able see the finished product. Because as we as we've talked in the past sometimes your. 36. Months resolutely out and so it's in trusting that that to have people come in and say hey look. You're right there are there are reports of of during the project Winnick it's a little difficult and seems a little bit long. But let me show you a Finnish pride and and I think that that's. That's a key did the people that are doing it too sure what Tom Cole what did you guys do for their house what he shown to that are. Here is so the go home that we have on the tour this year is is actually a whole holes remodel we did so it's not you know typically in the past we did a basement one year we did a kitchen the other other year. This is a whole house remodel where we actually. We actually re did the house from the front toward the back door including reconfigured bedrooms adding a bathroom. Attentions so why I mean we've. We kind of didn't showcase all of our work under one roof which is really kind of cool and that's why were excited to get this project time and tell her how long of a project to is that for you. That one start to finish was four months I mean we really stuck to our timeline and actually finished I think a little bit ahead of schedule so and and now I think that's why they were thrilled to when they were really easy to convince to try to do some would you say is front ordered back tour. Are you talk and live your room kitchen and all of it every every room and we actually. At one point during the demo process I could open the front door we took on all the walls so the back door. Except for like maybe three of them so you could literally see from the front Asa back and a house. He didn't really realize how big this house was antsy and got rid of everything in UN while this is a lot bigger and deeper house than what we thought. Look we're talking about it's her model homes in the segment and and again that's may twentieth and 21 go to Moore can nearing. Dot org for more information but I have to ask you but this project. Was there a point where the homeowners 10 Mike in this what have we done. You know I I I'd. I think they knew what was coming you know and Odyssey that first weekend when we down mauled the entire place and we were there for almost a week just down mowing it. But we too we took some pictures and I sent him they were on a town there in the weekend. And I sentiment pictures and need to stay he did it was hysterical attacks that I was getting back like you have to be kidding me in LA it's just all bundled up put a strategy yeah put it off track I want attractive we're close but Null and Tom and lighted saying. It makes your job so much easier to when you have great clients to work. Four and wince and these these these particular people or were just awesome total prize. I've got to believe at the end of this win when it was all done. They had just beat just a later date they Lauren and I honestly womb when we had it all done needs to be visiting you know these these were people that their last challenges on a college so it was kind of just the two of them. Really nice ranch on wall a toe aside and they just decided when Molly kids who are way it's you know it's now it's time for us to remodel and we're not going anywhere 'cause they liked the neighborhood they like the community self. Yeah when we were finished with tap project they had a really nice party at the end for our whole crew. They brought their whole family in all the daughters every team in my town and just kind of celebrated their a mile and it was really it. I mean that's that's why I do what I do. As you know week to my wife that we word just changed some things were updated in a few thinks and my daughter lose across streets as she sees that. My son lives out of fifty minutes away does it come over nearly as much as as my daughter and Milwaukee and and he'll go to. Yeah B kitten. Well I hope I'm here what why prayer was this when I was living here. And I said all of that whole budget went to like to feed you to it you know. The school video college in books all of it down and now you know maybe we are kits and looks a little better than Catholics good we've done this. It and I think that's exits mom and dad time it's appointed as much it is mama debt time this is the eighteenth annual tour remodel homes. Boy that death for mean toes sets up that that's for sure if you can do something and announce the eighteenth year. I know that I talk in some other near report members this thing has gotten really good you don't try kind of trial by error the first couple of years. I had no and I think that that's what we're doing a nice Jared that's what I'm excited about this year about the two or is that just hearing because of a part of that committee that works on that tour and just hearing some of the projects that are coming into the potential of those some Mary members to get some projects in and in the areas that they're in I think we're gonna have a nice. Cluster geographically in terms of there's going to be a bunch of projects in in a few different areas so it's really. You know might eliminate some of the drive time. Ten ten dollars ticket in advance fifteen at the door again may twentieth and 21 11 AM to 4 PM. By cancer in you know it's somebody you know Jim remember. A spouse child I mean all of us know somebody. And it's just it's. It's crazy you know it really is crazy and an eight united did tugs at your heart strings too because it's someone into knowing that you never expected you know I have I've got out. I've actually got and instructor at Arab fitness club he's my boot camp and served or thirty years old. Foreign audience sees four I can all know if so it's just in 3830 years old healthy as can be. So boy you know it says you never and also like you said work we're all touched by someone that stay experienced itself. I think this partnership with. But there's been some great young cancer foundation assists it's awesome. Yeah it it in I think it's going to be one that's gonna go one for a long time and if there is an event. Friday may nineteenth so the night before the tour a model homes. And downed it's it's gonna be in green DL at any residents. Tickets are 150 dollars a person there's a kid there's a dug hard till par there's some food things like that raising money for this foundation. And it was the the home that one that. The tour models last year. And yeah and you know Jay's Jay contractors yeah exactly Jed and a meant Jason does a great job that that companies as they've done some work for us to do great work. I I'm most impressed. And there it Bears on the website there's a way to get involved with with this you can 10 this evening and my wife and I are going to be there are a lot of people there. It should be great I just heard dad today that Santana Dotson is going to be there cellphone you Julio arterial or Sonoma and then yeah yes RE more trying to. She flew Roy's going to be Laura Butler is going to be in. In this area my times in the spring he had south has done a Florida if he's can be robbery and try to trade him as well. But there's going to be some people there make Glendon and I'm looking forward to see in this house as I would I've been on the web said looking at it. And very impressive is really impressive and you know I was Canada. The I was Kaiser and kind of teasing Jason nine and I are at our tour on meeting and I told him I said you know as your hosts as they cannot feel rusty and I think we can do is a three honors on his you know the weather's gonna some book. I kind of points it drying in his house so we can take out the swallow because got caught in a whole scandal instead Beers says the Al has started to turn red. I'm gonna end up in the ID they have like tea up call have you seen that I have not yet it there they'll play the of a pool house. That thing is nicer than my whole club hopes I'll end up through there if any buckets may ninth seeds. But again I would I would ask you get involved raising money for a really could cost. And if we can raise a lot of money for the a the Vince Lombardi. Of cancer foundation it it just goes to great cause and were really happen to be part of of offense and his first time this a first of time we've done event like this. Is yet this is the first time our partnerships are with them at the giant and and I think the last year so we're really excited I think this is is beyond fantastic amount. So awesome waddle were really have to be partisan here it's our sports tree 1057 FM the fan and anytime that we can help an event like this said. It's it's his great lasting nine unblocked Kamerion and I promised. Losers were gonna get 200 she's a good contractor in the correct contractor. But last week we talked but skills USA competition. And I asked from a number of people about it. They sit hate. How do schools get involved in that and it sounds a great events that that either you're getting young people. Feel pretty good about being involved in this business. And you Hewitt talked about march 30 and the 31 so it's common up and it's gonna be a weather tech correct. Yeah I skated today it's a really cool event out of her for anyone that doesn't know what skills USA does we'll sit skills USA is a national program that's geared towards. Skilled professions you know such as you know electricians plumbers carpenters masons and what they do is kind of worker and work with high school kids around the country. And these high schools have to kind. Involve themselves with skills USA and once they do it in there he belted two go to of various competitions. Out we have a statewide competition it's held here in Madison. On typical the in now and march April area but on the locally. Last year was the first year we ever had a skills USA eight competition of that has. Competition. For. For the carpentry area aspect about it so we had two schools last year participate Germantown a Hartford. Did a really nice job. One of the schools ended up winning neck competition and in the nary foundation actually kick money for them to go to the national competition Louisville which is in there and every June. And I was out and that's competition that they went competed again exactly I saw us and I think we're gonna do that again it is a national competitions in Louisville averaged himself. Wherever wins this one won't now may be able to goal two then national competition but. You know this year or exciting because we you know we went from two schools to five schools now which is fantastic second it so is it at that. It's gaining some steam and and that's exciting for us because we really need workers on the work. Or you don't I love the fact that that you this is state wide it's a state wide program and and schools from there I Kimberly. Germantown new Perot and schools part of all Blaine Taylor. Are all involved. Though that the people from part of Olin played Taylor probably come down spend the night before right so these kids there military. If if they're not part of a team you know and athletic team up there this is their team and they're coming down a competing against other schools I think it's wonderful thing you guys. Yeah I know it's it's it's created it's it's fun for me to watch Sam actually one of the judges it's going to be there on Friday in and you know being kind of out works is the guys come in on Thursday we have a little reception format we get to actually meet some of the high school kids. Which is a lot of fun too because we attic when you know we get to get in front of them and tell me how. How passionate we are about this industry and then on Friday morning on they're given a set a plans to build like a shed or structure. And you know they're off the ground and run and at 7 AM and their build in the structure including two in the wiring and everything in the you've got till 3 o'clock to try to get it completed so they have to they have all the mature as they need right there and you give the plans Canseco knew exactly so that's why we bring him in Thursday kind of look over the the plans. Kenny get their tools organized and ready so they can hit the ground running on Friday. On but yeah all of in all the materials were donated by Lowe's which is a route which is really cool on top of that I sauce you could trigger so we just yeah were were excited we got five schools this year I think it's going to be a lot of fun we've been added a couple more judges so. On the it's something that were wound we were really worked hard to try to develop and it's it's. Enough down that invite for me to be a judge bus got lost in the email Macias can you imagine to be been judged. Hey by the way I in my juices you know how many changed my phone number and I'll make sure that you get it but. I see that golf findings July 19 two iron wood and I kept. I do know avoid I know one good avoid a map I when I put I put that out there just is a new you'd spot their salary don't I'm pretty sure I'm pretty wait I'm pretty sure would be sick. That's tricked into class. I don't know 45 years I've been the and a put him quotations in the year at the celebrity. On a par three. That he did god do the same shot over and over and over again last year although my nose last your DV Amaral some midway through set. What's what's going. Hagel what your it's true he can actually good right now. And that's it don't say that and like I did you know I was coral probably after not hitting good shot against Murad I think we've had to walk it off. And I think I wanted to and you get used my shot but yet that's Aussie does that put that happened actually a lot last year and not quite sure how the tough part about that. It's really fun until about the last 34 sons rate as those guys been out there all day if you know one of saying the other contractors. These are commencement and fit it takes is why do you get through the last three. As it took to get through that observatory for vibrate or right but if you don't like it goes to good the money in that pin the foundation does such a good job. And and the work that they do that these guys again involved in that golf funny know what they're getting into its a fun day. He had nods and it's a great daily you know there is a lot of money at date for it's it's our biggest fundraising activity the year and and we do a lot of things in terms of you know providing scholarships these kids at the tech schools we do some community projects within it just really golf funnels back into the being in a positive. You know the workforce development in and play and look what you guys are you excited look what you're doing with with USA the skills USA capped his strength and it's about one of the things that we're doing on. The Roman sell the second half and again is here. So the runners still actually is not gonna happen this year okay it is honestly for the first time in I don't know how many years and people are actually starting to call line and I think we've sent a flyer out in some emails out in terms of so did the foundation actually now his head is. Established a partnership with the re store habitat for humanity depth in wall at Tulsa. And so now com we are actually we've we've kind of established a partnership where they're going to donate some money to the foundation and then as the foundation is asking all our near remembers just like we do for the for the rummage. To donate all of their materials to the restore well that's good stuff and so so we've established at partnership so and so the that the rummage wont happen but we're still doing good things in terms of having that partnership you don't. Night you know it's nice about that is used it in. You don't have to wait for that one day if if you're your consumer Coco to that receive go to very resilient young and you aren't always vote Sosa. And dom you can get great deals on stuff every day of the week over there it's a pretty cool place if you haven't been there. And there's still that did the dollars that the rom is still made. It's through their runs for the foundation. Will be will become a from them to recollect exactly that's awesome Hillis kid to break. Other said the break on and ask you about contractors and how to choose the correct contractor and I've got sold contractors and those guys hear me. Here's Tom Hayden bill Hughes my coast and special guest he is the owner of story you'll renovations. They're located up and Furyk in motel suck for numbers 414841. 1694. Or go to story no renovations. Dot com. This is the marquee nearing home improvement show. On sports Radio One 057 FM the fan's. You're listening to an airy home improvement show with dynamite may giver and only on sports Radio One 057 FM the fan. I was up what your question had 4147991250. Welcome back warn you neared home improvement show. I've scored pretty 1057 FM the fan's. I'm Mike we give her once I Tom mean Phil he's from story no renovations. Whose story you know renovations dot com time during the break and we're gonna talk about hard to crack contractor in this really fits and more with that. You were talking about the recession that that happened I guess 20089. And ten. And the difference in your industry from that recession has been incredible. Yet has you know I mean we kind of see it now and I'd daily or weekly basis if if you wanna caught that in terms of you know. Act between now all Lleyton and and probably 2010 when that recession you know was in full swing. You know a lot of us you know had had tentative to save our dollars and pinch our pennies and and a lot of these. I think that's where a lot of these contractors came out of the woodwork in terms of you know people were. Baptists take the lowest bid because that's kind of what the times were calling for blow you know now were seeing 567 years later. We're going in to fix a lot of that work that was done by the contractors that. ERA in the dead did dead the work on the lowest bid in the lowest bid is not. Always a way to go and hell that's one of the greatest reasons why in oftentimes. You know when you take that little lower bid you know you might be dealing with someone that that isn't license that doesn't know correct building practices. It's may be using inferior products where. Where these things are gonna start failing and we you know we see it all the time and I feel bad for the Klein the consumer that I'm you know. Here's here's 56 years later in their remodeling their bathroom twice wants to do that. Yeah that's it and I think what what happened back then I think you're right it was purely a financial decision and it was a need and out of want. And when that when it's a need. You wore willing to almost anything to get that need taking care of even if your easy you know on the back your had. Look this might be a short term fixed but I need to get this done because we want to stay in this house. And now you understand after having to need to go through that for 56 years. That OK now there's a want I wanna get rid of the shoddy work and I want to move into something better. And that's when you know it's important so when people are thinking about that or if they're gonna. But give it the first thing you'd use go to nearer website I that would be my advice right more canary dot org to great start. You know it's it's that I honestly all we all know that the Internet you can sign just a ton of information on there is sometimes becomes information overload but I think it's a good starting point you know if you just wanna kind investigate media company to retreated sure looked and it. At possibly. Giving net first phone call two in May be heaven and come out your house. In doing some research for today show I came up with. On this piece in and I thought his interest and wanted to start throwing these catching ditch your. Pitcher take on and Newsday is some information that I read eleven tips for hired a home improvement contractor. Number one on their list was connect with your contractor and they talk about the right person for the job will be really easy free to talk to. Make sure you know simple stuff like make sure you see I'd I. With the contractor on the job that your your looking to do. Any communication is key for our pride projects but when they start with connect with your contractor. I think that's a great way to start. Yeah and I I know I mean that's how we -- you know we're talking about the tour before I don't know why I thought it was such a great opportunity for. For potential you know clients and to meet their contractors and talk one on one yet talking you know. A lot of times you can gather a good feeling from a conversation you know. And and been able to connect as a is a huge thing because. When you're doing or remodeling project whether small you know mid range or large scale communication is the key. And you get date good initial conversation I think that helps and then as you go along you know appeared. If you're going to interview a firmer to retreat. Bob being able to call you know when you call them do the answer their phone or did they call you back within 24 hours I think that's agreed indicator of hey you know on the ideally get a whole this guy. You know ends of the communication lines are open to is. I think that they're one of the big the greatest ways a remodeling project can and sale is when that communication breaks down. Well and that was there are number one and I I agree with that number two. I I know that your gonna agree 'cause we've had this conversation before but understand what the quote and the price understand that that price. Reflects equality. So you'd there'd there'd that the what they talked about in this park he said look. A low bid may indicate that the contract uses so par materials.
